Ureteroscopy is a procedure used to treat stones located in the ureter or the kidney. Unlike older surgical methods, this technique requires no external incisions.|
A urologist uses a thin, flexible instrument called a ureteroscope, which is equipped with a high-definition camera. This scope is passed through the natural urinary opening (the urethra), through the bladder, and up into the kidney. The “flexible” nature of the scope allows the surgeon to navigate the complex, winding channels of the kidney to locate stones that were previously difficult to reach.
How Laser Lithotripsy Works
Once the kidney stone is located, the “laser” portion of the treatment begins. The process is highlighted below:
1. Fragmentation: A tiny laser fiber (Holmium or Thulium) is passed through the scope.
2. Dusting and Breaking: The laser delivers precise pulses of energy to break the stone into smaller fragments. Depending on the stone’s size, it may be broken into small “gravel” or “dusted” into fine particles.
3. Removal: Larger fragments are removed using a tiny retrieval basket, while smaller “dust” particles pass naturally and painlessly through your urine over the following days.

The Recovery Process
Following the procedure, a small, soft tube called a ureteral stent is often temporarily placed in the ureter. It is typically removed in a quick follow-up appointment a few days later.
Post-Procedure Tips:
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush out the remaining stone dust.
